My health/wellness journey, like many women, began out of the desire to look good. I didn't love my body and being someone who is incredibly result driven, I decided to shift my diet and see what would happen. I instantly saw changes in the way I looked and it propelled me to continue. My obsessive personality developed an eating disorder and since then, I have spent years repairing my relationship with food and my body. I now work with women to do the same. I share this because my initial relationship with food and what I consumed was purely motivated by the fear of being fat and the desire to be thin...sound familiar? But through the work I have done with myself, I have unlocked a much deeper and more intimate relationship with food that is integrated into my spirituality. The way I eat and what I choose to consume is directly influenced by my connection to Source.Read More
Hi loves! I wanted to write a blog post talking about plant based eating, what that means to me, why it's my preference (not something I rigidly adhere to) and how I eat in a way that is sustainable and nourishing. I also want to create a resource for those interested in transitioning to a more plant centric way of eating that makes it easy and approachable.
Let me start by saying that I don't use labels and I will never be the nutritionist that prescribes one way of eating. In fact, if you work with me, one of the first things we do is abandon all labels or things you've used to put yourself into a box. Maybe plant-based is a label in your mind, which I completely understand. But let me explain why I like the term plant based and why I don't see it as a dogmatic diet or label.Read More
I get asked all of the time how to use adaptogens, and specifically, how I like to use my elixir blends. I thought it would be fun to share a day on my plate so you guys can see what a nutritionist + adaptogen obsessed human consumes on the daily. Before we dive into it, I want to preface this post by saying that I stand behind everyone having their unique diet. What I am about to share is just one day. My diet shifts regularly and I could never use a single label to define the way I eat. I'm a true flexetarian and that's it.
Follow people who inspire you with their choices, but be aware of those who have an extreme or "one-way" tone to the content that they're sharing. Know that we're here to be free to shift and evolve. Drop the pressure around being perfect and know that your relationship with food is an ongoing + ever evolving journey. Stay curious and don't be too hard on yourself. There's always the next meal to refine.Read More
If you’re at all connected to the wellness world, I’m sure you are aware that meditation & adaptogens are both hot topics at the moment. Everyone is a meditation guide, spiritual teacher, reiki master, etc. Similarly, every blogger is adding he shou wu to their morning matcha + sipping mushroom coffee. So what’s up with these two being in the spotlight and how can they have profound affect on our health?
It has been said that the amount of stimulation one would receive throughout their entire lifetime, just 200 years ago, is the same amount of stimulation that we as westerners are receiving in a single day. What exactly does this mean? We have created a world that the human species is not yet fully adapted to. We see all sorts of conditions & disease stemming from “lifestyle,” meaning that most of our disease can be prevented. The key is the reduction of stress and the increase in adaptability. The likelihood of the world around us slowing down is slim. Instead, we want to work with our systems to create greater resiliency and more adaptability. Both adaptogens and meditation work on this spectrum.Read More
It is commonly accepted that between the months of September and January we enter into cold/flu season. But why does this time of year tend to come with an increase in illness? And why is vitamin C such a powerful remedy to consciously infuse into our diets? What is vitamin C really doing for us? And lastly, what are valid sources of vitamin C to incorporate during this time of year?
The days are getting shorter, the weather is becoming cooler, schedules are shifting and more likely than not, you’re beginning to think about and plan for the remainder of the year. Between October and December, things begin to pick up for many of us. Regardless of the fact that this year naturally calls for us to slow down.Read More
Hello loves! Fall is here and if your weather has been anything like the weather here in Colorado, it snuck up rather quickly! It probably didn't help that I was back in the midwest visiting family where it was strangely 95 degrees at the very end of September... needless to say, returning back to Boulder to wet, cloudy + cool weather was a bit of a shock.
This weather always makes me a bit lethargic. Rather than judging these feelings of lethargy and sleepiness, I tune in.
I ask my body how I can nourish her in this moment.
As the seasons shift, so do we. As a part of nature, we too are affected when the weather begins to cool down. Our body's natural tendency is to want to sleep more, stay inside, slow down and ground. For years I ignored this natural biological wave that so badly wanted to move through me. I resisted and pushed through the desire to rest.Read More
By now I'm sure we have all heard of this term, "hangry." You know...when you're so hungry it begins to effect your mood, how you're able to think and how you act? You've reached the point where you're willing to grab for just about anything in sight. We've all been there. I know for me, there was a time when I didn't know anything different. I went back and forth between feeling ravenous and feeling stuffed. I would feel as though I was ALWAYS hungry.
Experiencing what I felt was constant hunger, while also being someone who valued healthy food, made things difficult because I never knew when there was going to be food available that I would be willing to eat. This created deeper issues of food drama and anxiety. I certainly wasn't about to run through a drive through or grab a bag of chips from a convenience store. But at the same time, I would often feel forced to stretch myself longer than what felt comfortable and end up overeating later in the day.Read More
Adrenal fatigue occurs when your stress hormone, cortisol, which is secreted by your adrenal glands, is too high for too long and from that, various stages of adrenal fatigue occur. There are several phases of adrenal exhaustion. In holistic health we identify these phases as Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3 and adrenal burnout. Elevated cortisol in the body can be a result of numerous things and is likely an accumulation of several things. Emotional, physical, chemical and dietary stress can all be at play. For me personally, my issues stemmed from a history of overexercising, emotional stress from past body hate, unknowingly living in an apartment with toxic black mold and having a very sick parent for a period of time. This is a prime example of what can be underlying an adrenal related issue. It's not black and white. These things eventually added up to wreak havoc in my body.

This is a prime example of what can be underlying an adrenal related issue. It's not black and white. These things eventually added up to wreak havoc in my body. Fortunately, I was finishing up school for holistic nutrition and new exactly what was going on when it began to manifest into various symptoms. That said, most people are unaware of the contributing factors to their current state of health.Read More
If you've been following me and the evolution of my business, you know that I've made it my mission to empower individuals to have a healthy + nourishing relationship with food. The way I believe this is best done is through an intuitive eating approach. But what exactly does intuitive eating mean? I receive quite a few comments on various Instagram posts asking, "how do I trust my intuition when my body is telling me it wants sugar?" or "how do I tell the difference between cravings and what my body actually needs?" These are all completely valid questions that I wanted to address in a post and also provide some simple tips to begin an intuitive eating practice.Read More
Coffee, whether it's the whole ritual of it, the rich flavor, the caffeine boost, or likely, a combination of all of those things, we love our morning joe. I am asked all of the time whether or not coffee is good or bad, so I thought I would put together a blog post to explain.
Let me start by saying that I do not believe in victimizing one particular food, as long as it is a real, whole, food. I also don't believe in making generalized claims. For instance, everyone must strictly avoid coffee, nobody should be consuming dairy or we all need to be on a lower carb diet... In my experience, it isn't that black and white.
Coffee is touted for it's antioxidants. Different studies have shown its ability to reduce the risk of certain diseases, such as dementia. There's also studies that show it has a thermogenic effect on the body, ultimately boosting the metabolism. It's also a zero calorie beverage. Coffee on it's own could be considered a "clean" food. That being said, there are some things to consider if you're a regular coffee drinker. Let me explain...Read More
If you ask me, beauty is an inside job and it begins with cleaning up the diet. I have been getting quiet a few messages regarding hair growth and thought I would share my tips for growing long, healthy hair.
I'll be honest, I'm not much of a product girl. I keep it pretty simple when it comes to my beauty routine and if I'm being completely transparent, dry shampoo is my best friend... But, as far as foods go to support healthy hair and skin, I am always up on those.Read More
Most people would consider a smoothie a healthy choice. As a nutritionist, I would agree that smoothies have the potential to be great, but they’re not for everyone. In addition to that, I find that a lot of people are doing their smoothie all wrong. I often include smoothie recipes when offering meal guidance to clients. In doing so, I teach them how to build a smoothie that will digest well, keep them full, give them all day energy and support their metabolism. With a few tweaks, you can turn your smoothie into a nourishing and satiating meal.
WHY BLOOD SUGAR IS KEY FOR SMOOTHIE SUCCESS
The most common mistake when it comes to smoothie making is a lack of blood sugar regulating ingredients. Berries, bananas and greens are all good foods, but when blended up and consumed without anything to slow down the absorption, this seemingly healthy combo leads to blood sugar dysregulation. What does that mean for you? Increased cravings, elevated hunger hormones, mood swings, a less than efficient metabolism and fatigue later on.Read More
Currently sitting at my favorite spot in Boulder, Wonder Press, sipping an almond milk latte and basically bursting at the seems as I blog my heart out on this brand new platform. I started my first blog back in 2014, called The Glowing Clean Life, where I solely shared original healthy recipes. As my schooling to become a Holistic Nutritionist neared the end, I had my next website/blog designed, with my nutrition practice in mind. Many of you are most familiar with my previous site, Erika Elizabeth Nutrition. Blogging took a backseat as my career as a nutritionist began and life became CRAZY. Balancing a full time job in addition to seeing clients in private practice and keeping up with the many side hustles I had my hands in was a MAJOR learning experience. I had to learn to surrender to all the things I thought would be my life + trust and allow the universe to work her magic. It took about a year of work life to really see where I wanted to direct my energy for my business. I'm sitting here now with clarity and direction, something I truly lacked prior, and I'm ready to share it with YOU. Blogging is my heart. Being open + sharing my story as a means to inspire others lights my soul on fire. And having a unique voice in the saturated field of nutrition is exciting to me. The premise of my new + improved business: To inspire a food revolution where innovative nutrition is woven together with the power of our intuition, to create a synergistic relationship with the food on our plate and what our body is calling for in every moment.Read More
